News reports, weather forecasts, commercial broadcasts, and public announcements form Part 4 of the Leaving Certificate German Higher Level aural exam, while directly informing written notes, letters, and opinion pieces. These recordings deliver dense factual detail at native speed. Maximising your score requires recognising core news and weather vocabulary, converting spoken German numbers and clock times into digits without hesitation, identifying causal markers, and mastering the precise layouts and grammatical structures demanded in written production.

News Reports (Nachrichten) and Exam Strategy

Part 4 of the aural exam almost always opens with three short news reports followed by a weather forecast. You will usually hear these items unfold in a familiar order. The opening report tends to tackle a national disruption like a strike, a protest, or a serious road incident. Next comes a piece on health, consumer issues, or the environment, before the news turns to a human-interest story like an unusual contest or a local school project. The broadcast then finishes up with the weather.

Core News Vocabulary

GermanEnglish
die Meldung / die Nachrichtnews item / piece of news
laut Polizei / nach Angaben der Polizeiaccording to the police
der Unfall, verletzt, schwer verletzt, getötetaccident, injured, seriously injured, killed

zunehmen / abnehmen, steigen / sinkento increase / decrease, to rise / fall
die Behörden, die Regierung, die Bürgermeisterinauthorities, government, mayor
die Umwelt, der Müll, sammelnenvironment, rubbish, to collect

Signal Phrases That Herald the Answer

Examiners frame comprehension questions around pivotal factual shifts. Train your ear to catch these cue phrases:

  • der Grund dafür ist … (the reason for this is)
  • das bedeutet, dass … (this means that)
  • insgesamt (in total / altogether)
  • zum ersten Mal (for the first time)
  • in den letzten zwei Jahren (in the last two years)
  • unter anderem (among other things)

Letting the Marks Dictate Your Answer

Always let the marks guide how many distinct facts you supply. If a question offers 4 marks with the prompt 'Give details', the marking scheme expects either two developed points (2 × 2 marks) or four separate items (4 × 1 mark). Put the main point on the first line, then write supporting details on separate bullet points. Write your answers in clear English. Never provide conflicting alternatives such as '13 or 30', because an incorrect option cancels out the correct one.

The Weather Forecast (Der Wetterbericht)

The final item in the news section is frequently a weather forecast. Candidates often miss out here simply because they lack the specific terminology used by German meteorologists.

Weather Forecast Vocabulary

GermanEnglish
die Vorhersage / der Wetterberichtforecast / weather report
heiter, sonnigbright, sunny
bewölkt / stark bewölkt / bedecktcloudy / very cloudy / overcast
wechselhaftchangeable
der Schauer (die Schauer)shower(s)
der Regen, der Niederschlagrain, precipitation
das Gewitterthunderstorm
der Nebel, der Frost, der Schnee, der Hagelfog, frost, snow, hail
das Tief / das Hochlow-pressure system / high pressure
der Wind aus Nordwesten, frischer Windwind from the north-west, fresh wind
die Höchsttemperatur / die Tiefsttemperaturhighest / lowest temperature
um die 15 Grad, bis zu 20 Gradaround 15 degrees, up to 20 degrees
im Norden / Süden / Osten / Westenin the north / south / east / west
im Laufe des Tages, gegen Abend, in den Alpenduring the day, towards evening, in the Alps
es klart auf / der Regen lässt nachit is clearing up / the rain eases off
trocken, mild, kühl, schwüldry, mild, cool, close/humid
das schöne Wetter geht zu Endethe fine weather is coming to an end

The Four-Slot Answer Technique

A complete forecast answer draws on four core details: the general trend, precipitation with its location, temperatures, and wind or pressure conditions. Write temperatures down as digits immediately (such as '15°') and link the geographical area directly to the weather event, because marking schemes credit specific pairings like 'rain in the evening near the Alps'.

Advertisements and False Friends

Commercial broadcasts test exact factual retrieval: the price, the promotional offer, the opening times, or the contact method. Promotional audio moves briskly and leans on persuasive phrases to generate urgency.

Advertising Vocabulary

GermanEnglish
die Werbung, werben füradvertising, to advertise for
der Werbespotcommercial (TV / radio ad)
das Sonderangebotspecial offer
der Rabattdiscount
kostenlos / gratisfree of charge
umsonstfree of charge (or 'in vain')

Question Stems to Recognise

  • Was wird beworben? — What is being advertised?
  • Wie viel kostet es? — How much does it cost?
  • Wann findet die Veranstaltung statt? — When does the event take place?
  • Wo findet es statt? — Where does it take place?
  • Was ist das Sonderangebot? — What is the special offer?
  • Wie kann man mehr Informationen bekommen? — How can you get more information?

False Friends (Falsche Freunde)

Listen out for false friends in these items, as misinterpreting them costs easy marks:

  • das Gift = poison (a present is das Geschenk)
  • bekommen = to receive / get (to become is werden)
  • also = so / therefore (also is auch)
  • der Chef = the boss (a cook is der Koch)
  • aktuell = current / up-to-date (actually is eigentlich)
  • eventuell = possibly (eventually is schließlich)
  • der Rock = skirt; das Handy = mobile phone; das Publikum = audience

Public Announcements (Durchsagen) and Formal Register

Loudspeaker announcements in stations, airports, and public buildings use formal phrasing to announce service adjustments. Deutsche Bahn announcements routinely refer to platform tracks as das Gleis rather than der Bahnsteig.

Core Public Transport Vocabulary

  • die Durchsage (public address announcement)
  • das Gleis (track / platform, e.g. Gleis 7)
  • der Bahnsteig (station platform)
  • der Flugsteig (airport departure gate)
  • die Abfahrt / die Ankunft (departure / arrival)
  • die Verspätung (delay; Der Zug hat zwanzig Minuten Verspätung)
  • der Zug fällt aus / entfällt (the train is cancelled; note that absagen is reserved for events like concerts, whereas cancellations of scheduled transport use ausfallen)
  • der Zugausfall (train cancellation)
  • geschlossen / geöffnet (closed / open)
  • Eintritt frei (admission free)
  • erlaubt / verboten (permitted / forbidden)

In spoken items, initial information may be clarified or adjusted later in the recording. Never lock in your final answer from the opening sentence alone. Listen right through for signal phrases like Achtung an Gleis 3!, Information, or Bitte beachten Sie (please note).

Command Forms and Polite Register

Public announcements and advertisements rely on distinct imperative structures:

  • Sie-form (formal announcements): verb first, followed by Sie — Beachten Sie bitte die Durchsage! (Please note the announcement!), Steigen Sie bitte ein! (Please board!), Rufen Sie an! (Call us!).
  • du-form (promotions aimed at youth): verb stem without ending or pronoun — Komm vorbei! (Drop by!), Ruf an! (Call!), Sei pünktlich! (Be on time!).
  • ihr-form (groups of young people): regular present-tense verb without pronoun — Kommt vorbei!

When speaking to teachers or officials, you must maintain the formal Sie register:

  • Use Entschuldigung, darf ich Sie etwas fragen? to ask an examiner or teacher a question politely.
  • Könnten Sie mir bitte helfen? (Could you help me, please?)
  • To ask your teacher about homework, say Ich habe eine Frage zu den Hausaufgaben.
  • Wie bitte? Können Sie das bitte wiederholen? (Pardon? Could you please repeat that?)
  • Entschuldigen Sie die Verspätung, mein Bus hatte Verspätung. (Excuse my being late, my bus was delayed.)
  • Always address adults as Herr Müller or Frau Schmidt; addressing a teacher as du loses expression marks.

Numbers, Clock Times, and Causal Markers

Numerical data accounts for a large proportion of factual marks across news clips and announcements. German handles two-digit numbers by stating the units before the tens: einundzwanzig is literally one-and-twenty (21), siebenundfünfzig is seven-and-fifty (57), and dreiundneunzig is three-and-ninety (93). When listening, if you catch …undvierzig, write down '4_' in digits immediately, then slot the unit into the front space.

Number Conversion Drill

Practise converting these spoken German figures directly into digits:

  1. siebenundzwanzig Euro fünfzig → €27,50
  2. dreizehn Grad → 13°
  3. vierzehn Uhr fünfundvierzig → 14:45
  4. dreihundertfünfzig Kilo → 350 kg
  5. zehntausend Euro → €10 000
  6. fünfzig Prozent → 50%
  7. am dritten Mai → 3 May
  8. halb sieben → 6:30
  9. Viertel vor acht → 7:45
  10. einundvierzig → 41

Take special care with dreizehn (13) versus dreißig (30). The suffix -zehn signals the teen number, whereas the buzzing -zig marks the tens figure.

German Clock Times

Official announcements use the 24-hour clock (vierzehn Uhr dreißig = 14:30), but conversational items use relative expressions centred on halb.

German ExpressionLiteral MeaningActual Time
halb achthalf an hour before eight7:30
halb fünfhalf an hour before five4:30
halb zehnhalf an hour before ten9:30
Viertel nach fünfquarter past five5:15
Viertel vor sechsquarter to six5:45
zwanzig vor siebentwenty to seven6:40

Expressing Cause Versus Consequence

When a question asks why an event was rescheduled or disrupted, you must report the underlying cause, not the resulting outcome:

  • wegen and aufgrund mean 'because of' or 'due to'. They require the genitive case: wegen des schlechten Wetters (because of the bad weather), aufgrund eines Unfalls (due to an accident).
  • deshalb, darum, and deswegen mean 'therefore' or 'that is why'. They are adverbs that force verb-subject inversion: Deshalb fährt der Zug heute von Gleis 7 ab. (Therefore the train leaves from platform 7 today.)

Written Production: Notes, Letters, and Grammar Points

The vocabulary of advertisements, travel disruptions, and commerce connects directly to the 100-mark written section, which includes the Mitteilung (note), the informal letter, and opinion pieces (Äußerung zum Thema).

The Note (Die Mitteilung / Der Zettel)

A note requires a concise layout and a clear message:

  1. Greeting: Liebe Frau Meier, / Hallo Anna, (followed by a comma; the opening word of the next line begins with a small letter).
  2. Reason for writing: Ich schreibe dir/Ihnen schnell, weil …
  3. The core facts: what happened, your current location, and the expected time.
  4. Action request: Könnten Sie bitte …? / Kannst du bitte …?
  5. Sign-off: Bis später! / Viele Grüße, followed by your name.

Useful set phrases:

  • Mein Zug hat 20 Minuten Verspätung. (My train is 20 minutes late.)
  • Ich komme später nach Hause, ungefähr um halb acht. (I will be home later, around 7:30.)
  • Es tut mir leid, aber ich kann heute nicht kommen. (I am sorry, but I cannot come today.)
  • Kannst du mich bitte am Bahnhof abholen? (Could you please collect me at the station?)
  • Bitte sag deiner Mutter Bescheid. (Please let your mother know.)

Informal Letter (Der Brief) Layout

  • Place and date at top right: Dublin, den 12. Juni 2026 (note the accusative den and no comma before the year).
  • Greeting: Liebe Anna, (to a female) / Lieber Max, (to a male).
  • Opening sentence: vielen Dank für deinen Brief. Entschuldige, dass ich erst jetzt schreibe.
  • Consistency: stick strictly to du and dein; never slip into Sie.
  • Sign-off: Schreib mir bald zurück! Alles Liebe, followed by your name.

Opinion Phrases for Shopping and Advertising

  • Meiner Meinung nach ist Werbung oft irreführend. (In my opinion, advertising is often misleading — remember verb-second word order after this opener!)
  • Ich bin der Meinung, dass Online-Shopping sehr praktisch ist. (I am of the opinion that online shopping is very convenient — dass sends the verb to the end.)
  • Einerseits sind Fachgeschäfte teurer, andererseits bieten sie persönliche Beratung. (On the one hand specialist shops are dearer, on the other hand they offer personal advice.)
  • Ein großer Vorteil ist, dass man rund um die Uhr einkaufen kann. (A big advantage is that one can shop around the clock.)
  • Ein Nachteil ist, dass man die Kleidung nicht anprobieren kann. (A disadvantage is that one cannot try the clothes on.)

Asking Questions

  • W-Questions: Question word + conjugated verb + subject (Wann fährt der Zug ab?)
  • Yes/No Questions: Verb takes first position (Kostet die Fahrkarte zehn Euro?)
  • Indirect Polite Questions: Question word or ob kicks the verb to the end (Können Sie mir sagen, wann der Zug abfährt? / Ich möchte wissen, ob das Geschäft sonntags geöffnet ist.)

The Five Plural Patterns

  1. -e / ¨-e: der Preis → die Preise; der Zug → die Züge; der Bahnsteig → die Bahnsteige
  2. -er / ¨-er: das Kind → die Kinder; das Land → die Länder
  3. -(e)n: die Verspätung → die Verspätungen; die Öffnungszeit → die Öffnungszeiten (as a rule of thumb, almost every feminine noun takes an -n or -en ending in the plural)
  4. -s: das Ticket → die Tickets; das Handy → die Handys
  5. No change / Umlaut only: der Laden → die Läden; der Schüler → die Schüler

Dative plural rule: Add an -n to all nouns in the dative plural unless the plural already ends in -n or -s (mit den Kindern, auf den Bahnsteigen, but mit den Autos).
