Reading text and SMS conversations tests your ability to understand informal messages between friends or family. In the Junior Cycle Common Level exam, you read chat dialogues to identify the general situation, track who is speaking, and extract specific details like meeting points, clock times, transport, and unexpected changes of plan.

Reading a Chat Conversation

Before answering questions, read through the entire chat to understand the general situation: who is messaging, what is happening, and why?

Read each message carefully. Use the surrounding words to understand unfamiliar expressions.

Check who sent each message to avoid confusing the person running late with the person waiting.

Arranging Meetups, Times, and Locations

Messages can explain arrangements, everyday events, or changes of plan. Read what each message actually says.

Question PhraseDetail RequiredExample Response
¿Dónde?Location / placeenfrente de la estación (opposite the station)
¿A qué hora?Exact clock timea las cinco y cuarto (at 5:15 / quarter past five)
¿Cómo vas al hospital?Transport methoden autobús (by bus) / en metro (by underground)
¿Por qué?Reason / causeporque tengo entrenamiento (because I have training)

Spanish times are built as: a la / las + hour + y (past) or menos (to) + minutes. The phrase en punto means exactly on the hour. For example, a las cinco y cuarto is 5:15, while a las nueve menos diez is 8:50.

Delays, Excuses, and Mishaps

Text exchanges often feature delays or mishaps. Look for past actions explaining what went wrong.

Spanish PhraseEnglish MeaningSituation
llegar tardeto arrive lateGeneral delay
perder (el autobús / el tren)to miss (the bus / train)Public transport problem
El coche no arrancaThe car will not startBreakdown
Me caíI fellAccident
urgenciasAccident and Emergency (A&E)Hospital emergency
No puedo irI cannot goCancellation

Distinguish between the cause of a delay and the travel solution. If a sender writes Perdí el autobús, voy en metro, the reason for lateness is missing the bus; taking the underground is simply how they are travelling now.
