An autobiographical text is a personal account written in the first person detailing a person's background, milestones, hobbies, and achievements. In the Junior Cycle examination, you must understand the overall narrative and retrieve specific facts, dates, and feelings, answering in either English or Spanish as instructed.

Reading Strategy and First-Person Milestones

Read the text once to understand its overall meaning: identify who is writing and the main theme, such as childhood, school, hobbies, or a sporting achievement. Once you grasp the general story, scan for the specific details each question targets.

Autobiographies appear as blogs, diaries, or athlete profiles where the author writes from their own perspective. Spanish verb endings show who is performing the action, so writers rarely include the pronoun yo (I).

  • Nací en...: I was born in... (gives birthplace or birth year)
  • Crecí en...: I grew up in...
  • Me mudé a...: I moved to...
  • Empecé a (+ infinitive): I started to...
  • Fui a...: I went to... (using the preterite — the simple past tense used for completed events)
  • Gané...: I won...

Note that fui is also the preterite form of ser (I was). Check the words that follow it: fui a followed by a place means 'I went to'.

Time Markers, Ages, and Dates

Personal narratives move between past milestones and current life. Look for time markers to follow the sequence of events:

Spanish Time MarkerEnglish Meaning
Cuando tenía... añosWhen I was... years old
A los... añosAt the age of...
Hace dos añosTwo years ago
El año pasadoLast year
Actualmente / AhoraCurrently / Now

Watch out for false friends. Actualmente means 'currently' or 'at present', never 'actually'. Éxito means 'success', not 'exit'. Give the exact date details requested, and keep an event's date separate from the person's age when it happened.

Pastimes, Feelings, and Reasons

Writers frequently discuss leisure activities, personal motivations, and how an achievement felt.

  • Learn each activity with its verb: juego al baloncesto, juego al tenis, hago natación, hago ciclismo.
  • For playing a musical instrument, learn phrases with tocar and the definite article (toco el piano, toco la guitarra).
  • Personal feelings are introduced using estaba or me sentí (contento/a, orgulloso/a, nervioso/a, cansado/a).
  • The word porque (because) signals a reason for an action or decision.

If a question asks for two feelings, give both: nervioso pero contento means 'nervous but happy'.

Question Words and How to Answer

Identify the question word first to target the required information:

Question WordTarget Information
¿Dónde?A place or location
¿Cuándo?A date, day, or time
¿A qué edad?At what age an event occurred
¿Cuántos años tiene / vivió?Current age / Duration in years
¿Por qué?A reason (look for porque)
¿Qué deporte / instrumento?A specific pastime

When a question asks for a specific number of details (such as 'give two details' or 'name three reasons'), list exactly that number of facts from the text in order. If answering in Spanish, the safest response is the key noun (e.g. baloncesto) or a sentence with the verb changed to the third person (juega al baloncesto).
