This topic covers writing an informal Italian blog post in response to an image or written prompt. In the Junior Cycle examination, answer every requested point clearly, choose suitable tenses, and give opinions when asked.
Writing a blog post
A blog post (il post sul blog) is an informal text written for online readers. Matching the style of a digital post shows you understand the purpose and audience of the task.
- Il titolo: Keep the title short, such as Un viaggio indimenticabile (An unforgettable trip) or La mia scuola (My school).
- Il saluto iniziale: Greet your audience informally with Ciao a tutti! (Hello everyone!) or Cari lettori (Dear readers).
- Il corpo del testo: Write short paragraphs that clearly answer each point from the exam prompt.
- La conclusione: Close with a friendly phrase such as A presto! (See you soon!) or Lasciate un commento qui sotto! (Leave a comment below!).
Other common digital phrases from the syllabus include aggiornare (to update) and clicca qui (click here).
Using the picture or text
Before writing, examine the stimulus to identify the details needed for your response. Break the prompt down with simple question words:
- Chi? (Who?): Name the people involved, such as la mia famiglia or i miei amici.
- Dove? (Where?): Identify the place, such as in piazza or al mare.
- Quando? (When?): Use time words such as ieri, oggi, or domani.
- Che cosa c'è? (What is there?): Use c'è for one item and ci sono for more than one: Nella foto c'è una cattedrale; ci sono molti turisti.
- Che cosa fanno? (What are they doing?): Describe actions with active verbs: I ragazzi visitano il museo.
- Argomenti comuni (Common topics): Prompts frequently focus on family, school, holidays, leisure, fashion, sport, or celebrities.
Using tenses across timeframes
Use the tense each prompt needs: present for current activities, past for completed events, and future for plans.
| Timeframe | Auxiliary and Participle | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Presente | Regular verb endings | Studio l'italiano a scuola. |
| Passato prossimo with avere | avere + past participle (does not change to match the subject) | Ieri abbiamo mangiato una pizza. |
| Passato prossimo with essere | essere + past participle (agrees with subject) | Siamo andati/e a Roma. |
| Futuro semplice | Future stem + ending | Domani visiteremo un museo. |
Form the passato prossimo with the present tense of avere or essere plus a past participle. With essere, the participle matches the subject in gender and number: siamo andati/e. With avere, it does not change to match the subject: abbiamo mangiato. Verbs such as andare and partire take essere, while many other movement verbs such as viaggiare and camminare take avere.
Linking ideas and expressing opinions
To produce clear, accurate, connected writing, link short clauses and share your point of view rather than writing separate, isolated statements.
- I connettivi: Join sentences using e (and), ma (but), o (or), perché (because), and poi (then).
- Mi piace / Mi piacciono: Use mi piace before an infinitive or singular noun (Mi piace la città), but use mi piacciono before plural nouns (Mi piacciono i monumenti).
- Secondo me: Introduce opinions directly with Secondo me è bello (In my opinion, it is lovely) or Secondo me il cibo è squisito (In my opinion, the food is delicious).
- È stato / Mi è piaciuto: Evaluate past experiences using È stato divertente (It was fun) or Mi è piaciuto molto il viaggio (I really enjoyed the trip).

A completed past action using the passato prossimo: for example, 'Ieri ho visitato un museo'.
How do you say 'there is' and 'there are' when describing what is in a photo?
Use 'c'è' for a single person or item, and 'ci sono' for more than one.
Which form of piacere is needed in the sentence: 'Non _____ questi panini'?
Mi piacciono, because 'questi panini' is plural.
Why is 'siamo andati' written with an 'i' at the end?
Verbs conjugated with essere must agree in gender and number with the subject (masculine plural here).
