Understand your grades

Congratulations to everyone receiving their results. Whether you’re delighted, disappointed or somewhere in between, give yourself credit for the work it took to get here.

When and how do you get your results?

Junior Cycle results were released to schools on Wednesday, 7 October 2026, from 10am. Each school decides when to give them to students during the school day, so follow your own school’s arrangements.

Your school is your first point of contact if you haven’t received your results or have a question about your statement. This is a guide to results day; your individual grades come from your school.

Almost 74,000 students reach this milestone

This year’s results cover 73,879 candidates. The State Examinations Commission is issuing 651,123 grades across 21 subjects, with candidate numbers slightly above 2025. It is the fourth consecutive year with more than 70,000 candidates.

Across all subjects, 8.6% of grades were Distinctions and 30.2% were Higher Merits. Those are shares of subject grades, not the percentage of students who received a particular set of results.

National figures give context. They don’t tell you how much you improved, which subjects you enjoy, or what you can achieve next.

Junior Cycle grades explained

The current system uses six descriptors. The revised bands introduced in 2025 apply to these results, so a Distinction starts at 85%. Older guides showing a 90% threshold are out of date for this cohort.

Junior Cycle grade bands used in 2026
Grade descriptorPercentage range
Distinction85%–100%
Higher Merit70% to below 85%
Merit55% to below 70%
Achieved40% to below 55%
Partially Achieved20% to below 40%
Not Graded0% to below 20%

The revised bands were built into the normal standard-setting process for 2026; in 2025 they were applied through a technical adjustment after marking. Irish, English and Mathematics are examined at Higher and Ordinary level, while the other subjects are at Common level.

Think a result needs to be reviewed?

Start by talking to your school. Junior Cycle appeals must go through the school authority, which must consider the result significantly different from what was expected. Students and parents cannot apply directly to the SEC.

The school submission deadline is 14 October 2026. A fee of €32 per subject applies and is refunded if the appeal leads to an upgrade. Applications are moving online this year.

Contact your school promptly to confirm the process and its own deadline for gathering requests. Don’t wait until the national closing date to start that conversation.

Your exam results are part of a bigger picture

The Junior Cycle Profile of Achievement (JCPA) records a broader range of learning than the final exams alone. It includes classroom-based assessment and SEC grades, recognising achievement across the programme.

Keep that wider picture in mind when reading your results. A statement of exam grades cannot capture every skill you developed, every project you completed or every challenge you worked through.

What should you do next?

  1. Take a moment. You don’t need to compare every subject with your friends. Decide who you want to share your results with and celebrate the effort behind them.
  2. Talk through anything unexpected. A subject teacher or guidance counsellor can help you put a grade in context and discuss your options.
  3. Look for one useful lesson. Perhaps practice questions helped, or you left a topic too late. Pick one habit you want to carry into your next year.
  4. Make your next plan small. Whether you’re in Transition Year or starting senior cycle, a manageable weekly routine is easier to build on than a promise to change everything at once.

If you’re disappointed, you don’t have to settle every question today. Speak with someone you trust before making big decisions about subjects or levels. If you’re celebrating, agree your plans and journey home with a parent or guardian.

Common results-day questions

Are these the “Junior Cert results”?

“Junior Cert” is still a familiar phrase, but the current programme is the Junior Cycle. This guide covers the 2026 Junior Cycle results.

What percentage is a Higher Merit?

A Higher Merit is 70% to below 85%. A Merit is 55% to below 70%. You can check all six descriptors in the grade table above.

Should I change subjects because of one grade?

Use the result as a starting point for a conversation, alongside your interests, classroom work and your teacher’s advice. Give yourself time to understand it before deciding.
